NGV Solo Show

The dreamy, visceral world of Sci-Fi Artist and Body Architect Lucy McRae

From images of augmented bodies and wild flights of biological fancy to an algorithm that makes your face “perfect”, Lucy’s first solo show at the National Gallery of Victoria asks how technology is changing our bodies. “The gap between sci-fi and sci-fact is shrinking.”

“I’m not interested in problem solving,” says McRae. “The point of my work is to ask impossible questions and swim upstream. For me, the takeaway is, ‘What aren’t we asking?”

VIRTUAL TOUR OF THE SHOW HERE

Lucy McRae: Body Architect presents 13 years of work from McRae, from digital images that resemble the more alien end of fashion photography to thought-provoking films. As our lives become more and more tech-enhanced, McRae asks the big questions. What will genetic engineering and mapping the human genome do to our sense of identity?

Curated by Simone LeAmon the Hugh Williamson curator of contemporary design and architecture National Gallery of Victoria.

LUCY MCRAE: BODY ARCHITECT

Science-fiction artist and speculative designer Lucy McRae occupies a unique space in her field. Taking the body as her central focus, she explores how human biology might evolve with the assistance of design, emotional reconditioning, molecular biology and technology. These concerns are presented through the medium of video, photography and installation.

This volume includes an interview by the NGV’s Simone LeAmon, The Hugh Williamson Curator of Contemporary Design and Architecture, and an adjunct professor in the School of Design, RMIT University, Melbourne; and texts by Dr Adam Nash, Associate Dean of Digital Design at RMIT University’s School of Design; and Dr Bronwyn Lovell a science-fiction poet and scholar.
